USEFUL INFORMATION FOR IMGs

Understanding 19AA and 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973

To treat private patients in Australia you need a Medicare provider number. Sections 19AA and 19AB of the Act place restrictions on IMGs ability to access Medicare benefits, understanding these restrictions is important.

Determine your assessment pathway

IMGs seeking registration to practice medicine in Australia need to determine which assessment pathway they are eligible to apply for.

English language proficiency requirements

IMGs applying for medical registration must meet the English Language Skills Registration Standard

Documentation requirements

There are many documentation requirements you need to produce, each with their own complexity.

Primary Source Verification of Medical Qualification

IMGs must apply for primary source verification of their medical qualifications, regardless of which of the three assessment pathways are being pursued.

AMC MCQ examination

IMGs need to pass at least the AMC MCQ Examination to be eligible for provisional or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia

AMC Clinical examination

IMGs need to pass the AMC Clinical examination to obtain general registration (optional at this point).

RACGP assessment of overseas experience

IMGs seeking to enrol in RACGP Fellowship assessments via the General Practice Experience (Practice Eligible) pathway need to have their time in general practice assessed by the RACGP Censors through a formal application process. 3GA programs may also require assessment of overseas experience as a prerequisite.

MEDICAL REGISTRATION PROCESS (STANDARD PATHWAY)

SECURE A JOB OFFER WITH A GP CLINIC, ALONG WITH AN OFFER OF EMPLOYER SPONSORSHIP

IMGs require an offer of employment, with a 19AB exemption, from an approved business (for the purposes of 457 visa sponsorship).

APPLY FOR AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A PRE-EMPLOYMENT STRUCTURED CLINICAL INTERVIEW (PESCI)

The PESCI is conducted to assess that the applicant has the knowledge, skills and experience to practice safely and effectively in the particular general practice position for which limited registration is sought.

APPLY FOR LIMITED REGISTRATION WITH MEDICAL BOARD OF AUSTRALIA (MBA)

Limited Registration allows IMGs to provide medical services under supervision. Limited Registration is available to both specialist IMGs and non-specialist IMGs, is granted for up to twelve months, and can be renewed after this period, up to a maximum of three renewals.

OBTAIN IN PRINCIPLE REGISTRATION

Successful applicants for limited registration will be granted in principal registration.

APPLY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION AND BORDER PROTECTION AND OBTAIN A TEMPORARY WORK VISA

Once registration with the MBA has been approved in principle, you can lodge a visa nomination and apply for an employer sponsored worker’s visa.

REGISTRATION APPOINTMENT WITH AUSTRALIAN HEALTH PRACTITIONER REGULATION AGENCY (AHPRA)

Upon receipt of your employer sponsored work visa attend an appointment with AHPRA to obtain limited registration.

OBTAIN REGISTRATION AND APPLY FOR PROVIDER AND PRESCRIBER NUMBERS

Upon obtaining registration, apply to Medicare for initial provider and prescriber numbers.

COMMENCE WORK ON RECEIPT OF PROVIDER NUMBER

Upon obtaining Medicare provider number commence providing medical services.
